Family Health Care Clinic - West San Fernando Valley

In 1999, El Proyecto del Barrio opened the S. Mark Taper Foundation Center for a Health Community, which provides services to the growing underserved population in the West San Fernando Valley. The Center has proved a vital health link for the community, with an average growth of nearly 20 percent per year in the number of medical visits completed at the Family Health Clinic. Last year, the clinic totaled 33,000 medical visits, with a total patient population of over 10,000 persons. The vast majority of these patients had no other health care options in the local community, with 90 percent of the families living below 200% of the federal poverty level.

The S. Mark Taper Center for a Health Community provides a number of accessible and affordable health care services for the community through its Family Health Care Clinic, including Family Practice Medical Services, Obstetrics and Gynecology Services, Pediatric Medicine, HIV Testing and Treatment, CPSP Program, Family Planning Counseling, Laboratory and Immunization Services.

In addition, the Center is a City of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board (WIB) Certified Youth Opportunities Center, providing at-risk youth ages 14 to 21 a single point of contact for accessing age-specific and developmental services that provide educational, occupational and life skills attainment.

Since inception in 1971, El Proyecto has earned a reputation for excellence and providing "Esperanza" (hope) to the community. For more than three decades El Proyecto has strived to expand and enhance the services provided to the community. Today the organization operates Family Health Care Clinics in the greater San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles and serves an area covering more than 400 square miles. These clinics provide more than 70,000 annual medical encounters.

Community Impact:

With El Proyecto, the majority of the patients we serve would be unable to access even the most basic levels of primary care. In keeping with our mission, all medical treatment is provided to whomever is in need regardless of their ability to pay for services rendered.
